ENG 101 Freshman English I 3 Credit Hours
A skills-based, writing-intensive course, English 101 introduces and develops the student’s abilities to organize, visualize and write effective essays that use advanced academic rhetorical tactics needed for success in academic pathways. The course covers the writing process, academic oral and written rhetorical strategies, and grammatical elements specific to a variety of essay genres. Students will explore and analyze how language is used to achieve communicative goals common to academic writing in various essay genres through in-class writing activities, lectures and homework assignments. This Humanities course is a pre-requisite to English 112 and counts toward partial fulfillment of the General Education requirements at Alfaisal University.

ENG 102 Freshman English II 3 Credit Hours
As a continuation of ENG 101, ENG 112 focuses on developing the student’s abilities to organize, visualize and write effective essays that incorporate primary and secondary research. The course continues to cover the writing process and the academic oral and written rhetorical moves and grammatical elements relevant to genres different than those covered in ENG 101. Students will explore and analyze how language is used to achieve communicative goals common to academic writing in these essays, through in-class writing activities, lectures and homework assignments. This course is a pre-requisite to ENG 222 and/or ENG 223, and counts as a General Education requirement at Alfaisal University.

ENG 113 Freshman English II 2 Credit Hours
As a continuation of ENG 102, ENG 113 focuses on developing the student’s abilities to develop, organize, and effectively support arguments by incorporating primary and secondary research. The course continues to strengthen the writing process and the oral and written rhetorical moves and grammatical elements relevant to genres different from those covered in ENG 102. Students will explore and analyze how language is used to achieve communicative goals common to academic writing in these papers, through in-class writing activities, lectures, discussions, digital fora, and homework assignments. This English course is a prerequisite to ENG 224 and/or ENG 231, and counts as a General Education requirement at Alfaisal University. It is for medical students only.

ENG 221 Oral Communication 3 Credit Hours
A speech-intensive course that develops the student's abilities and refines skills in effective oral presentation, speech-making, and the "pitch-driven" case, in rhetorical and goal-oriented "business/professional" presentations on products and positions, and in close attentive listening and speech-act analysis. This course counts for a Humanities course in the University's General Education Requirements.
Pre-requisites: English 101, English 112

ENG 222 Technical Writing 3 Credit Hours
In 21st century professional settings, writers are expected to produce a wide range of texts using different media. Because every technical writing situation is unique, this course will help students adapt their communication for different audiences, purposes, and environments. Creating a shared critical vocabulary will allow students to make well-informed choices in the technical writing they produce in their own pathway studies. While this course emphasizes writing, it also helps students develop the reading, listening, and speaking skills necessary to communicate effectively in a variety of workplaces, and it balances a theoretical approach with practical and extra-curricular means of learning. This course counts for a Humanities course in the University’s General Education Requirements.

ENG 223 Literature 3 Credit Hours
A skills-based reading-intensive course, English 223 introduces students to, and develops their abilities to understand, visualize and evaluate, literary texts (including novels, short stories, drama, and poetry); and to offer coherent interpretations of texts through compelling literary analysis essays.

This humanities course fulfills a general humanities requirement in the College of Science and General Studies. The course pre-requisite is English 112, and English 223 may be taken any time after successfully completing that class.

ENG 224 English for Medical Students 3 Credit Hours
This course is concerned with developing fluency and confidence in using English in medical contexts. It increases EFL medical students' familiarity with medical written language and discourse in different medical contexts. The focus is on carrying out specialized activities in English, but attention is given to reading comprehension skills (expanding the English general and medical vocabulary repertoire through extensive readings), academic and scientific writing skills, and technical medical terms as required.
Pre-requisites: English 102, English 113

ENG 231 Medical Terminology 2 Credit Hours
Medical terminology is the study of the principles of building clinical terms used in health care professions. By covering essential, basic terms of the body’s systems, students will be actively learning to understand and use Latin and Greek roots, suffixes, and prefixes. Etymologies of words used in the health care professions will also be emphasized as aids towards understanding and retention.
